Qavavau Ashoona
Cape Dorset
Qavavau Ashoona was born on Februrary 19th, 1967 in Cape Dorset, located in Nunavut Territory, Canada. Qavavau still resides in his birthplace where he has learned the art of stone carving from his family members. From a young age, he was exposed to the art and cultural heritage that has been passed on for several generations.
His father, Koomwartok Ashoona, is a renowned Cape Dorset sculptor, and his late grandmother was Pitseolak Ashoona. His grandmother and uncles, Kiawa Ashoona, the late Kaka Ashoona and Namoonai Ashoona, are all master Inuit carvers who have contributed greatly to the development of contemporary Inuit stone sculpture.
Qavavau’s works are mainly representations of bears – whether walking, standing or dancing, they are all finely finished and imaginative in form.
