Thomas Akilaq

Inuit Native Artist Thomas Akilaq from Baker Lake

Baker Lake

Born in 1961, Thomas Akilaq comes from a family of artists. His parents settled in Baker Lake in the 1960’s, where Thomas has spent his life.

Thomas’ father, Moses, carved while his mother, Hattie, was a well-respected print-maker. She passed away in 2010, leaving behind a successful artistic career. Thomas’ brother, Michael, and sister-in-law, Mary, also carve and reside in Baker Lake.

As with most Baker Lake carvings, Thomas works with Basalt stone. He prefers to depict humans and domestic scenes.
