Lyle Wilson – Curator’s Choice Fall 2024
blogThis November, you’re invited to step into the cloistered world of Haisla artist Lyle Wilson where the spirit of K’wax-thlau (wood) takes form in his newest collection.
Rooted in the traditions of his people, this exhibition reflects Lyle’s deep association with wood, a sacred material that has shaped both his art and his identity.
The collection will be on display from November 30th until January 10th, 2025, offering an intimate glimpse into the heart of Haisla culture and Lyle’s decades of masterful artistry.
Lyle’s carvings are a celebration of memories, traditions, and survival. Growing up in C’IMOTSA (Kitamaat), he recalls spending his childhood gathering and cutting wood with his family, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong reverence for the materials that sustained them.
For Lyle, K’wax-thlau symbolizes resilience and cultural continuity, passed down through generations. His work honors the strength of the land as well as the enduring connections and traditions of the Haisla people.
Unforgotten: A reverence for K’wax-thlau (wood) features intricately carved model totem poles, soul catchers, and panels, all crafted from British Columbia’s native woods: red Cedar (Din Yas), yellow Cedar (Kwanalas), Yew (Glumc), and Maple (Jaw-wee-calas) as well as others including Black Walnut, Wild Crabapple and Norway Maple. Many of these materials were salvaged from Vancouver’s beaches and logging clear-cuts, breathing new life into wood shaped by nature’s forces.
Lyle’s early fascination with wood began with simple toys— a fishing boat and a wooden knife—carved by his relatives. These early memories planted the seeds for an artistic journey defined by precision, creativity, and cultural significance. His work seamlessly blends ancient Haisla techniques with a personal connection to his craft.
Through his carvings, Lyle offers a profound meditation on the interdependence of culture and nature—each piece telling stories of land, ocean, and ancestors.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to explore Lyle Wilson’s extraordinary collection and experience his homage to K’wax-thlau (wood).
