Audla Pee

Inuit Native Artist Audla Pee from Cape Dorset

Cape Dorset

(1920 – 1998)

Audla Pee was born in 1920 and grew up in Cape Dorset. He was married to the late Nurlupik Pee, a sculptor and craftswoman. His children and grandchild were influenced by their work and also took up carving.

“Audla is known for his carvings of bears in the green stone. Unlike many [Inuit] carvers that portray bears as they actually are, [Audla] gives them a spiritual quality. They seem to possess a superhuman power or intelligence. [Audla’s] works are in numerous collections throughout Canada” – from Sculpture/Inuite, 1971
