Don Lancaster
Kwakwaka’wakw Nation
Don Lancaster was born May 31, 1965 in Alert Bay, British Columbia, Canada. He is a member of the Kwakwaka’wakw nation, a community that inhabits the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island. Currently, Don resides in Victoria with his family and is actively involved in culturally based events. Don takes the Sun, Sisiutl (double-headed sea serpent) and the Wolf, three important crests within the Kwagiulth nation, as his family crest symbols.
Don initially became interested in pursuing Northwest Coast art at a young age and has been designing jewelry for fifteen years (1997). Norman Seaweed, a prominent Northwest Coast Native goldsmith has greatly influenced Don’s work, teaching him the basics of this highly intricate and detailed art form.
Don incorporates his traditional Kwakwaka’wakw form with a balance of simplicity and fine detail to ultimately create exquisite jewelry that is in demand by many avid collectors. His work maintains a consistent balance of tradition and a contemporary vision which sets him apart from other artists.
