Fred Davis

Northwest Coast Native Artist Fred Davis from Haida Nation

Haida Nation

(1955 – 2014)

Fred Davis was born September 15, 1955, in the northern Haida village of Masset, located in the Queen Charlotte Islands, or Haida Gwaii, in Northern British Columbia.

As a young artist, Fred studied with many other carvers in Masset, including Richard Yeltatzie and Ron Wilson.   Inspired by Bill Reid and Robert Davidson, Fred carved for many years.

He was a descendant through his mother’s and grandmother’s lineage of the Raven Clan from the ancient community of the Skedans.  The people of the Skedans were considered to be the leaders in setting new trends in the arts.  Fred carved masks, poles, rattles, drums, as well as argillite, gold and silver jewelry.
