Joanassie Manning

Inuit Native Artist Joanassie Manning from Cape Dorset

Cape Dorset

Joanassie Manning was born on June 6, 1967 in Cape Dorset and has lived there all his life.  He started carving at the age of twenty, and credits his grandfather, the renowned Cape Dorset carver Osuitok Ipeelee, as a major influence. His mother, Annie Manning, has worked for years as a translator for English and Inukitut and is also well versed in the art of sewing and doll making.

Joanassie has developed a strong personal style in recent years; his sculptures are skillfully executed, with careful composition, and show a fine attention to detail.
