Johnny Sagiaktuk

Cape Dorset

Johnny Sagiaktuk (Sagiatuk, Sageaktok) was born in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, on December 11, 1964. His parents, Sagiatuk and Kakulu, were also artists from this region.

Johnny mostly draws his inspiration from the wildlife that inhabits the Canadian Arctic, carving a wide range of subject matter. His carvings of animals are naturalistically rendered, with smooth flowing curves and subtle details.

Johnny’s sculptures are often highly polished to best highlight the beauty of the Serpentine stone, the medium with which he works most frequently.
