Mathew Aqigaaq

Inuit Native Artist Mathew Aqigaaq from Baker Lake

Baker Lake

(1940 – 2010)

Mathew Aqigaaq was born near the Kazan River Falls, and spent over two years in the Manitoba sanitorium in the early 1960s. Upon his return to Baker Lake, he was unable to hunt and trap, so he turned to carving as a source of income.

Mathew’s wife, Marjorie Aglubak, is a Baker Lake wall hanging artist. Mathew’s older brother, David Ikutaaq, is also a Baker Lake sculptor.
