May Lonsdale

During September 1987, May Lonsdale was born in the Inuit hamlet of Pangnirtung on Baffin Island within the territory of Nunavut.
May is one of many artists in her family. Her father Nutaralaq is a carver. Her mother Malaya is a carver, tapestry artist, printmaker, and she also makes drawings. Her three brothers, Geeshee, Juelee, and Moar, are all carvers. Mays’ brother, Enukee, creates prints and carves whalebone.
May’s prints depict life in the Arctic and those who inhabit it. The people and creatures in her prints tell of a very traditional lifestyle. From families returning home after the hunt to Snowy Owls searching for their next meal. The stories she depicts are as relevant today as they were hundreds of years ago.
May creates stencil prints and stonecuts. Her meticulous attention to detail gives her work a beautifully refined finish, often going as far as to cut the detailing for the hair on a creature’s body, which is an impressive feat for a medium such as stonecut prints.
