Taloyoak (formerly Spence Bay)
Michael Nulliayuk was born in Taloyoak, Nunavut, in 1946. He is a lesser-known artist who works primarily in bone and antler, creating small-scale depictions of Arctic wildlife.
Taloyoak is the northernmost community on the Canadian mainland and has been an important place for the Inuit for thousands of years. The word Taloyoak is means “Large Caribou Hunting Blind” in Inuktitut. The rugged landscape is home to a wide variety of Arctic wildlife and is renowned for its Arctic char fishing.
