Ned Matilpi Sr.

Ned W. Matilpi Sr. was born in 1957 in Alert Bay, which is located off the northern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

He’s a member of the Lawit’sis Ma’amtagila Band on Turnour Island in the Johnstone Strait region of the central coast of B.C. between Gilford Island and West Cracroft Island.

His father is Oscar Matilpi, who is responsible for influencing his carving when he began at the age of 25.  Although Ned’s pieces have a more contemporary flair on the traditional aspects of his cultural heritage.
