Ottokie Aningmiuq

Inuit Native Artist Ottokie Aningmiuq from Cape Dorset

Cape Dorset

Ottokie was born in September of 1983 in Kinngait, NU. Like many artisans in the Cape Dorset region, he practices the traditional carving forms and has entered the thriving artistic community of the north.

Aningmiuq was taught to carve by his father and was fortunate to have quite an artistic family to draw inspiration and knowledge from. Similar to his father, he has stayed where he was raised and is one of the many creatives keeping the traditions of Cape Dorset alive today.

His preferred mediums are Serpentine and Marble stone and, with this material, he creates works which are depictions of the people, land, and animals that surround him. Aningmiuq carves with a playful hand that gives life and personality to his figures. He also carves Inuk figures in traditional clothing and often engaging in customary practices such as fishing and hunting.
