Robert Walsh

Northwest Coast Native Artist Robert Walsh from Heiltsuk Nation

Heiltsuk Nation

Robert Walsh was born October 28, 1951. He married into the Seaweed family, specifically to Patrick Seaweed’s cousin. After spending many years in Bella Bella, British Columbia, Canada with his wife’s family, Robert took up Native art as a way to help teach his children about their heritage. Robert has been adopted into the Heiltsuk nation.

Once he began to explore the field, he found that his own eye for design and detail made his work unique and sought-after.  Robert began working as an artist in wood and quickly progressed to gold and silver. In 1989 he apprenticed under Patrick Seaweed and began engraving on a full-time basis in 1993.

Robert’s style is considered southern Kwakwaka’wakw, for it is representative of the depth, simplicity and boldness in design that appeal to many collectors.
