Ryan Scoular
Kwakwaka’wakw Nation
Ryan Scoular is a third generation first nations carver who grew up in Port Alberni, born March 31 1984 to Derald Scoular and Cindy Thomas. At the age of 9 Ryan began his training in the Kwakwaka’wakw style, learning under his father Derald who studied under his uncle Randy Stiglitz and Master Carver Gean Brabant.
Ryan’s Ancestral Bloodline can be traced back through his grandparents Donald and Brenda Scoular, to the “Timulite Tribe” in Cowachin and the Sechelt Indian Band in Sechelt. Ellen of Sechella, or “Thawquamot” was Ryan’s’ ancestral Grandmother, and daughter of the Sechelt Indian Band Chief in the late nineteenth century.
Ryan’s influences are vast, with a great love for traditional west coast native art as well as modern and contemporary art. “I want to always stay true to my traditional roots, respecting my teachings while challenging myself to push my artistic boundaries as I evolve as an artist”. He has created a wide variety of carvings including Masks, Headdresses, Panels and Totem Poles. His carvings can be found in galleries and private homes across North America and Europe.
