Vernon Joseph White was born in Old Massett on Haida Gwaii in 1980. He is from the Raven clan and of Nee Kun Quigawaay meaning; those born at house point. Vernon’s crests are the Grizzly Bear, the Killerwhale and the tca’maos or Snag to name a few.

In 1998, Vernon started carving full time, apprenticing under his father, renowned carver Christian White. Vernon started creating everything from paddles and bentwood boxes to argillite works. In 2000, Vernon started to carve masks and learned to make his own tools. Most recently, Vernon has learned the difficult job of inlaying his work.
