FAQ

Reserve

You may choose to reserve an item in consideration of purchase by clicking the “Reserve for Purchase” button (instead of Add to Cart). This allows you the opportunity to contact our gallery with any inquiries prior to purchase and it will ensure the item continues to be on hold while you are communicating with us.

When you place a “Reserve” online, it doesn’t guarantee that this piece will be yours as there may be a time overlap with visitors in the gallery, telephone calls or emails whereby a piece is placed on hold in advance of your online reservation.

The Gallery can only place items on hold for a 24-48 hour period at which time the reservation will be automatically released – please contact us directly for more details.

We do our best to update our web gallery as soon as a piece is placed on hold or sold.

If you should find an item already on “Reserve” that is of interest to you, please contact us directly via email and we can provide you with the status of the piece and whether it will become available for purchase again, or if the sale is in progress with a buyer.

  2. Choose the piece(s) you wish to order and “Add to Cart”
  3. If you wish to add more items to your shopping cart, then click “Continue Shopping”
  4. When you have finished shopping, click either the “Proceed to Shipping and Billing”, or “Checkout” option at the top of the web page
  5. If your order states that it requires “special shipping”, the gallery will contact you directly with further instructions for the separate payment of the shipping costs.

Order confirmation

Coastal Peoples is not a purely web-based company as we have a prime downtown gallery location. We do our best to update our web gallery as soon as a piece is sold, but cannot guarantee a piece is available until we have confirmed your order.

How to pay

Major credit cards are accepted (VISA, Mastercard and AMEX) and we accept debit cards in person at the gallery. If you live outside of Canada, your credit card will be billed in your local currency using an exchange rate at your card company’s discretion.

For online purchases through our web site, we accept only VISA or Mastercard at this time, and AMEX is accepted via telephone, email or in person. Debit Cards are accepted in-gallery only.

Currencies:  When you select a currency other than CAD$ online, the exchange rate is only approximate and based on an estimated daily rate.  All online purchases made through the ecommerce cart are in CAD$ funds.  Daily exchange rates will vary and final price adjustments may occur on your card so please consult your bank or financial institution for more details.

In addition, online purchases may be paid via Direct Bank Transfer (Wire Transfer) after clicking on the “Place Order” button.  A wire transfer will take additional time to process your purchase as the funds must clear our bank prior to shipping your package.  Please follow our detailed instructions closely and, if you have any further inquiries regarding this payment method, please email or call us directly.

We also accept payment via e-transfer through Canadian bank accounts only, and by personal or certified cheque (these purchases take additional time for the funds to be cleared through the bank). If you wish to pay using these methods, let us know when you confirm your purchase and we will provide you with the applicable details.

Layaway is an optional service offered by the Gallery based upon a minimum purchase of CAD$2,000 – any late payments on a layaway program will be subject to a processing fee – please contact us for complete details via email or call 604.684.9222.

Please note: Returns or Exchanges – If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with your purchase and, provided it is in its original condition, you are welcome to return it within 7 days of purchase/delivery for an exchange or gallery credit (no expiry date). The Gallery is unable to refund delivery/transport costs or any other shipping costs incurred.

For any purchases online that have not been shipped yet, the Gallery policy of exchange or gallery credit applies.

Layaway

Comfortable. Flexible. Easy. One of life’s most rewarding experiences is collecting fine art, and sometimes it’s best to take a little more time to make these acquisitions with ease.  We understand and want to do everything possible to make collecting your next artwork more comfortable.  At Coastal Peoples Gallery, we offer an interest-free layaway program based upon a minimum purchase of CAD$2,000 and offer flexible terms which can be customized to your individual needs.  Any late payments on a layaway program will be subject to a processing fee.  Please make inquiries by contacting us via email or call 604.684.9222.

Shipping

Coastal Peoples Gallery ships worldwide and is pleased to provide shipping quotes on any items upon request, and can recommend the best method of professional packaging and delivery.

The Gallery specializes in quality packaging and crating for worldwide shipment with reputable, competitively-priced carriers and pricing quotes can be provided in advance.

Shipping Quotes:

After your online order is submitted, the Gallery will contact you either via email or telephone to arrange shipping details and separate payment of shipping costs as required. Local taxes are not applicable when shipping outside of Canada.

To obtain a shipping quote prior to purchasing, please contact us at here.

When you receive your shipping quote email, we require your confirmation to proceed with payment in writing so please respond ASAP. If you do not receive an email response from us within 24-72 hours, please check your Inbox/Junk email folder or contact us at 604.684.9222.

Gallery policy in effect for all purchases whether or not shipped: Exchange or Gallery Credit within 7 days.

Shipping Options:

Typically, your package will be shipped via DHL (USA & International); FedEx (Canada); or Canada Post (Canada, USA & International) depending upon where you live, the type of package and contents, and the cost to ship.  If you wish to make other arrangements on shipping, please contact us directly to discuss further.

Shipping Costs:

If your online order states that shipping has not been charged at the time of purchase, the Gallery will contact you directly with further instructions for the separate payment of the shipping costs.  For security purposes, online credit card details are not retained by the Gallery; however, separate shipping costs that have been approved will be processed through the same credit card used for your online purchase.

Costs will vary depending on the shipping destination, dimensions, weight, and  insured value of the packaged item. If required, a crate will be an additional cost.

If a rushed shipment is requested, there will be an additional cost.

Shipping charges will include insurance, unless otherwise noted. Smaller packages shipped via Canada Post offer insurance as an option.

For a signature upon delivery, shipping quotes provided to you may or may not include this option, so please ensure that you choose the correct shipping method that best suits your needs.

Contact us via email to obtain more details on the most cost-effective method to ship your package.

Taxes, Duty & Fees:

When shipping outside of Canada, no local GST/PST taxes will be charged. When shipping across Canada, HST is applied to any provinces that already have HST and only GST applies to those provinces that do not have HST.  Shipments within British Columbia will have both PST + GST applied.

When shipped to the United States, no duty is charged on Canadian First Nation’s artwork (some exceptions may apply with specific state taxes although this does not apply to all states – please consult your local government). In addition, US Customs may apply a MPF (merchandise processing fee) to your shipment, which will vary by the value of the merchandise, and this is to be paid by the receiver of the package (MPFs are separate from shipping and/or insurance costs charged by our gallery).

For International destinations outside of North America, there may be additional taxes or duties, which are paid by the person importing the artwork.  Each country varies so please contact your local Customs authorities for more details.

Shipping Restrictions:

When exporting outside of Canada, there are specific materials that are restricted; including IvoryWhale boneIvory Walrus tusksIvory Narwhal tusks, and Baleen.  Some Inuit and Northwest Coast artworks may contain these materials so they are prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 as well as CITES.

Non-prohibited items are Caribou bone and antler, which are allowed to be exported outside Canada.

Additionally, each country will have their own restrictions under law regarding the import of specific animal materials.  We highly recommend prior to purchasing any artwork that you check with local Customs officials to determine if your item is affected.

It is the responsibility of the purchaser to be aware of any restrictions with regards to export clearance on prohibited materials.

For more details and/or assistance, you may contact us via email.

Packaging:

For packaging, please allow the Gallery a minimum of 3 – 5 business days (during summer season, at least a minimum of 10 business days) to prepare your package unless you have requested an immediate or rush shipment. If your item requires a crate, there will be a waiting period for a custom crate to be created as well as an additional cost for the crate. Please contact us via email or call 604.684.9222 for an obligation-free crate quote or more details.

Customs:

On a random basis, there may be the occasion when USA Customs or International Customs deems it necessary to perform an inspection of the goods being shipped to you.  They may choose to hold the piece for a short period of time, which is beyond the control of both the Gallery and shipper. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time while the Gallery assists Customs in expediting your package as quickly as possible.

In addition, there may be specific documents or personal information that Customs requests from you for the purpose of clearing your package prior to delivery.

If you are contacted by Customs or the shipping company while your package is being held and you require any assistance, please contact us directly.  Please be aware there are bad actors who may send fraudulent emails to you so please ensure that you read all correspondence carefully prior to responding – more details are shown further down on this page, which is entitled Fraud Alert.

Please note: The Gallery will not be held responsible or accountable for any additional Customs charges.  Any additional charges are to be paid by the receiver.  For specific details and further information, please contact the Customs offices of your country.

Your Shipping Details:

If your shipping address is different than your billing address, please indicate when placing an order.

If you happen to live in a remote area which is not easily accessible, please notify us as this will allow the Gallery to choose the most appropriate courier company for shipping.

Please note: Courier companies will NOT ship to P.O. (Post Office) boxes so please provide a physical shipping address.

Estimated Delivery Date:

All delivery dates or times provided by DHL, FedEx or Canada Post are only estimates and cannot be guaranteed since there may be circumstances that could delay your package (weather, customs delays, shipping volume delays, COVID, etc.), which are not within the control of the Gallery.

Please note: Any shipping costs or additional fees paid for regular or rush shipments will NOT be reimbursed if the package does not arrive as scheduled.

Fraud Alert:

If you receive any emails from DHL, FedEx or Canada Post requesting payment on Custom fees, etc., please ensure that it is NOT a scam email. Courier companies will NOT contact you about Customs, VAT, or similar fees/charges prior to the package leaving the Gallery.  You will only be contacted by Customs if the package is being held by the Customs office.  Always track your package online first to ensure that it is at the border with Customs. What should I do if I receive a damaged piece of art?

Our Gallery packages all artwork with the greatest of care to ensure a safe delivery.  In our experience, damaged artwork is a very rare occurrence.  If you should receive a damaged piece, please contact us immediately upon receipt at 604.684.9222 or via email.  Please take photos of the damage, the box and all packaging material, and save these items as we must have them in order to process your claim.

How do you package artwork?

Our Gallery specializes in quality packaging and crating for worldwide shipment. We are pleased to provide shipping quotes on any items upon request, and can recommend the best method of professional packaging and delivery.

What does Limited-edition mean?

Many of the serigraphs (prints), giclees and intaglios are produced by the artists in limited quantities.  Each graphic in the edition is identical and considered an original.  Once the graphic series is completed sold out, they are no longer available.  If the artist deems appropriate, they may decide release an artist proof (A/P) or colour proof (C/P) at a later date and these are typically 30-40% higher in value as they are considered to be the best prints within the edition.  Since the artist usually keeps them, when released, they are considered more rare thereby more valuable.  Limited-edition, artist or colour proof numbering is clearly notated on the piece by the artist.

Is the artwork in our collection a financial investment?

All art patrons are encouraged to purchase artworks they love for their own pleasure and aesthetics, although our Gallery professionals are available to advise you on particular artists or works that are the most financially viable for future appreciation.

How can I commission a piece of jewelry or artwork?

For complete details – visit our Commissions page here.

Is your collection authentic?

Yes. Our Gallery collection is chosen with great deliberation and we endeavour to provide a selection that is diverse and authentic Canadian First Nations.  All art works are handcrafted and of a very high standard.

Each artwork is accompanied by:

  • A biography of the artist*
  • A writeup on the crest figure(s)
  • Written story on specific pieces (when available)
  • Details about the authentic nature or style of First Nations and/or Inuit art
  • Upon special request, a Certificate of Authenticity and/or Appraisal, with details of the piece and guaranteeing it to be a genuine work of contemporary First Nations art can be provided
