Yeomans Trilogy: Enduring Spirits 2022

Opens to the public June 5 to July 15, 2022

“Doing a show can be a difficult journey, but with this particular show the appearance of a worldwide pandemic in the middle of preparation was a huge challenge. Staying focused, doing the work, yet knowing the changing rules and protocols meant delay after delay in scheduling a public opening. Online shows have become a logical alternative for many galleries in recent times, but we feel fortunate that Coastal Peoples Gallery share our belief that contact with the public is important.

Trace and I have collaborated on works for almost forty years. Her works illustrate many mediums, such as fabric art, paintings in oil and acrylic, wood carvings as well as bronze and resin casting. Having a talented partner has proven to be an amazing resource. Her artistic vision and understanding of what works add a kind voice of reason to my sometimes blunt approach to art.

We have shared the limelight with our son, Kyran, in another show, but this is his largest contribution so far. I suspect the situation will reverse where Mom and Dad might be allowed to contribute one or two pieces to one of his shows” – Don Yeomans

As the first family exhibition held at Coastal Peoples Gallery, which runs June 4 to July 15th, 2022, this new collection is the culmination of three dedicated years of contributions from master artisan Don Yeomans alongside his immensely innovative wife, Trace and son Kyran who epitomize Yeomans Trilogy: Enduring Spirits.

During the artistic process that took place throughout a global pandemic, the Yeomans trio possessed an unwavering commitment to create a body of work that speaks to the strength and endurance of family spirit. The collaboration and convergence of each artist’s styles was influenced by their confined time spent together along with shared inspirations.

There are distinctive layers of creativity captured in the Yeomans’ works, and they immersed themselves into their multi-cultural backgrounds: as reflected in the Chief’s Seat Celtic pattern expressing Don’s Scottish roots; and Ukrainian blossoms painted alongside a Haida Raven in Trace’s paddle.

Over many decades, Don Yeomans’ artworks represent a masterful capacity to carve ingenious pieces that retain the essence of traditional themes even when contemporized. His relentless interest in experimenting with color, abstraction and various carving techniques illustrates a rare level of expertise.

Originally Trace began designing with Don and then embarked on creating her own artworks in ultra-suede, oil painting, and dabbling in wood carving. These artistic forms are exemplified in her triptych titled ‘Raven Transforming’ where these techniques flawlessly connect. Trace is an expert sewer and painter who has an innate attention to detail like no other. Her ideas are boldly experimental and courageous while illustrating how multi-cultural imagery can be blended seamlessly.

“In the past, I have done a lot of pieces that reflect on my lineage and culture. I am very proud of my heritages and find each one interesting. I am constantly trying to combine both Haida and Ukrainian aspects of my culture into my art.” – Trace Yeomans

As Kyran continues the evolution of his career and talent, he admits to approaching his work from an intellectual and spontaneous point of view. With his new baby son Rio arriving last year, he intends to be a role model to pass along an enduring heritage and knowledge to the next generation.

“I consider myself very fortunate to have had this modelled for me by my parents: this recognition that the truly great ideas aren’t by any of our own doing, that the key is to put oneself in a position to be able to receive them [ideas] clearly and truly not to lose them in translation. This is a perspective I’d like my son [Rio] to know exists – something to be added to his own lexicon for living and creating.” – Kyran Yeomans

While observing Don, Trace and Kyran’s exceptional work as they progressed, many emotions came into play; anticipation, exhilaration and admiration. Clearly, their artistic development has extended beyond the traditional to explore the use of modern materials, concepts and themes with a resolute focus and vision. Through their personal pursuits and unique aptitudes, complex ideas have materialized into single, multi-media and collaborative artworks highlighting their respective specializations.

It’s been a privilege to have been a part of this journey representing the spirit of this extraordinary collection. We wish to thank Don, Trace and Kyran for their incredible commitment as well as our dedicated team at the Coastal Peoples Gallery for their amazing determination in realizing this exhibition.
