Haida Eagle, Raven & Bear Pole
Geoff Greene
CA$14,500.00Glass, etched and sandblasted
Exclusive to Coastal Peoples Fine Arts Gallery
The interplay between tradition and innovation is the premise for this contemporary totem pole. While cedar wood predominates, noted Haida artist Geoff Greene has applied his foresight in designing traditional Haida motifs in the contemporary glass medium. It makes a strong visual statement with its structured Haida form line, yet the translucent nature of the glass softens the composition, clearly defining the progression of Haida art. The Eagle is portrayed perched from the top, with the Raven and Moon following. The Eagle signifies peace and friendship, while the Raven is the folk hero who created the Moon, stars and the universe. At the base of the totem, the Bear is a close relative to mankind known to share both human and animal traits.

T’suxt’sáesagame Canoe Bentwood Box
Kevin Daniel Cranmer
Price upon requestRed Cedar wood, Acrylic paint, Cedar Bark Rope, Abalone shell
Kevin Cranmer’s magnificent bentwood box illustrates the origins of the Ninalkinuw clan, one of five clans of the Namgis tribe and includes the Tlingit ancestors of the Hunt family. It was inspired by the traditional cedar containers that were designed to fit perfectly into a canoe, allowing travelers to take perishables with them on their long journeys. The boxes could be made air-tight, which meant that the perishables would be preserved for a longer period of time. Hunters and fishermen could also ensure that the bounty they brought back was still fresh, even after days of canoeing. The box did not take up much space in the canoe, as its shape allowed it to serve as a seat for the paddlers.

Manawanui [Framed]
Susan Point RCA
CA$3,500.00with Roi Toia & Todd Couper (Maori)
Serigraph, Edition 65 of 99
2006
Framed
“The phenomenon of life exists within nature’s splendor. As the land draws its breath from the winds above, so too does it exhale with the receding tides of the ocean. This interpretation of land, sea and air is likened to the majestic bird, the Hokioi (native Eagle, Roi Toia), who traverses the realms of the over-worlds, the Thunder Lizard (Susan Point) who protects the “life principle” of the land and the Whai (Stingray, Todd Couper) who patrols the domain of the underworlds. The center arrangement depicts the essence of life and the evolution of death symbolized by two spirals opposing each other.
Our connection grew following visits in New Zealand and Vancouver. I felt a tremendous kinship with all the Maori artists I met, and was overwhelmed by their generosity and hospitality during my trip. At the time of the Kiwa exhibition, we began this collaboration celebrating the artistic and spiritual ties between our cultures.”
