“The pacific spirit run, 10km (6.3 Miles) run through the University of British Columbia Endowment Lands (Pacific Spirit Park), was and annual fundraising event for local hospital charities. It continues today, though it has been renamed. The first year didn the design for the run was 1990, so 2001 was the twelfth consecutive year I supported the event by designing a signature image to be used for fundraising purposes. Each year I produced a limited edition print of the design, and on a few occasions. Children of the Earth, as a limited-edition serigraph. I continued to support the evolving foundations work with an original design every year.

As with all previous images for the Pacific Spirit Run, Children of the Earth relates directly to the event. The design also represents motion and the feeling of people coming together to achieve a common goal. The four different human faces represent multi-cultural diversity and illustrate our connection and the communication thread we share.

To explore the image further in more dimensions, I carve a yellow-cedar spindle whorl of the same image and combined it with glass components to emphasize the meaning. I believe we are all children of Mother Earth.” One Family” and I hope this message is visually conveyed through my imagery. The red glass dome in the center of the piece represents the bloodline of all the peoples, as do the forms spiraling from the center of the faces that represent humanity from all four corners of Mother Earth.”

“For my ancestors, the primary purpose of art is to unveil a parallel reality that is visible only in our minds—to share a glimpse of Supernatural Beings, with the world of Human Beings. Educated in science and with a spirit drawn to art, I see Earth as one great Being—with rock as a skeleton and running water as veins and arteries, great oceans as hearts—sustaining ecosystems. All as an interconnected biome—a web of life living, at least on the surface, symbiotically… as prey, and as predator.

Iinang Xaadee—Herring People play a vital role in the ecosystem. They nurture, feed, give of themselves to keep beings alive in all realms— undersea, earth, and sky. When balance prevails, Herring People gather to dance in their great longhouse in such great numbers and with such vigour that the atmosphere overhead reverberates with their excitement. Now, Human Beings see Herring solely as a resource, blinded, not seeing their true value, only seeing monetary gain at the expense of the whole.” – April White
