“I called this triptych ‘Raven Transforming’ because the design continuously transforms from one medium to another to form a complete Raven design.
This was a fun set to work on – each panel being a completely different medium created a bit of a challenge to keep all of the pieces aligning where they meet. This meant checking several times throughout the process of each panel. I was pleased with the way these came together in the end.” – Trace Yeomans -

“I went fishing with Reg and his friend Tom Wylie last summer. I was really taken because they were charged with excitement. They kept handing me a rod but I was just happy to watch because they were really interesting… When we went to the river to fish we were excited to know that we had replenished the food supply. Reg has constantly replenished the halibut and salmon supply for freezers in the village because he feels the need and so few people own boats.
The focus point in this piece of art is a Spring Salmon depicted with the face of Humanity. Traditionally, the native societies were established around fishing, hunting, and gathering. The most valuable resource was salmon. For thousands of years, salmon was the primary food source for the people on the Canadian Northwest Coast. As a result of overfishing came a time of scarcity. Salmon perished and humanity depended heavily on its return. Salmon is a powerful symbol of regeneration, prosperity, and renewal for the Haida people.

In the bottom right corner of this painting, Kuugan Jaad (also known as Mouse Woman) comes into sight. She is a character in many Haida legends. Mouse Woman is a supernatural being. She is the mother of Raven according to the mythology. She often appears in stories as a helper or advisor to those who are on a journey or to those who have crossed (or are about to cross) to another dimension (Spirit World or the unknown). She is highly respected as she offers great wisdom to restore order and balance. According to mythology, Mouse Woman can change shapes. She can be a big eyed mouse and change into a tiny human grandmother. However, in art, her appearance is mostly abstract.

When I’m creating a design, sometimes subconsciously Kuugan Jaad just appears in the art piece. Her form arises automatically during the creative process. It is striking because she is known to lend a helping hand to story characters in our legends.“ ~ Robert Davidson -

The Beaver appears in Northwest mythology and is a family crest in many regions throughout the Northwest Coast. According to legend, the first Beaver was a woman, whose husband frequently went on long hunting and fishing trips. In his absence, his lonely wife took solace swimming, enlarging her pond with a dam and building her own water dwelling. Eventually, she transformed into a Beaver and their children were Beaver People, founding the Beaver lineage.
In mythology, they are often associated with the powerful undersea supernatural beings and the magic Giant Beaver can cause natural disaster with one slap of its wide, strong tail. Characterisically, the Beaver is known to keep to himself and cares little for the activities of the humans, except when they are directly affected. Thus, they often give wise advice so it is important to listen when they do decide to speak.

Joe Wilson has created this limited-edition print series illustrating the traditional Coast Salish whorl in which both the male and female Killerwhale are represented in balance and harmony with one another.
The ‘Journey of Hope’ was designed specifically for the survivors of the tsunami in Japan in 2011 to pay tribute to their survival instincts as well as their future hopes and dreams.
The Killerwhale is an important crest symbol, associated with power, strength, dignity and communication.
The Killerwhale is thought to be the reincarnation of great chiefs so they are the majestic protectors of mankind. Many believed that those lost at sea were carried away by the Orca to their villages deep within the ocean and they would be guided to a new life and a new beginning.
Killerwhale Clans live in Killerwhale Villages deep within the ocean; when at home they remove their skins and live as large humans. Mating once for life and thought to be the reincarnation of great chiefs, these majestic animals are the protectors of mankind. While known to capsize canoes and carry the inhabitants to their Killerwhale Village, they are also reputed to act as guides to humans caught within storms.

“The main figure is of a mother wolf with a cub at her feet and another still in her womb. I liked the idea of wolves for this concept because of their tight community-based society. In my experience, women have always been the ones to step up and ensure that our community could be a safe place. They also lead the way by ensuring that we have a future to look forward to through land and water protection.
Above all of that, hanaa’nax(women) have the capacity to be the embodiment of community through their ability to bring life into this world. More than that in Ts’msyen society, rights flow through the women. My sister and myself are Ts’msyen because our mother is Ts’msyen, but my sister will be the only one to pass along those rights to our next generation.
Just to clarify, the translation is not perfect when it is in English, and in no way am I referring to women as containers for children. Our community is what makes our society strong, and I want to highlight that the most important rolls in my communities have always been filled by women and hanaa’ax are the most important part of Ts’msyen society” -Phil Gray

“Sgaana Saahlaan Sdings means Two Finned Killerwhale. The imagery in this print focuses on the two dorsal fins. Attached to the body of the whale, they have no control over their direction or destination. The thin lines around the design represent the spray and the water that rolls off the body of the whale as it emerges from the depths to take a breath. With this new energy, it continues its journey, facing an ever-changing ocean landscape.
The first dorsal fin represents the discomfort and apprehension that comes with the unexpected changes in our lives. It braces itself for the next wave, the next plunge, engaging in a losing battle against the momentum of the whale. The thin lines between the dorsal fins form teeth, creating a mouth that represents a shared experience and a shift in our mindset. “My first experience actually seeing traditional carving in situ was fishing eulachon at Kemano. I saw graveyard memorials (ah-aluuch-tin): grey, weather-beaten and somewhat moss-covered, but very impressive in their natural state and site. Although I didn’t know it at the time, it was part of the beginning of my life-long interest in Haisla culture.
The eulachon fish are special to the Haisla people. At Kitamaat, there is a mountain that has a dip in its outline which the Haisla liken to a canoe. When the sun set in this ‘canoe-dip,’ that signaled that the eulachon were about to spawn in the Kitamaat River and all the Haisla eagerly awaited them!
The wildlife that also pursued eulachon was a true natural phenomenon: eagles, seals, sea lions, crows, ravens, seagulls, otters, mink, sawbill ducks, halibut, porpoises, bullheads, and undoubtedly many others one couldn’t see! To represent all of these creatures in one image, a raven, seagull, sea lion and bullhead are shown, each with an eulachon close to their mouths.
The sea gull is important because Haisla history likened the thousands of gulls flying around the estuary of the Kitmaat River to a giant monster’s mouth; therefore, Kitamaat was a place avoided until the first Haisla settled there.
A young Haisla girl sat on the riverbank and watched as a bullhead waited on the river’s bottom and let the current sweep eulachon into its wide mouth. The traditional net (tak-calth) used to fish eulachon also has a wide mouth and also tapers to a narrow end like a bullhead’s body. A bullhead is shown with a net-like pattern on its body, alluding to the tak-calth’s inspiration.”

“This design depicts salmon, with an asymmetrical moon face, inspired by a spindle whorl artifact.
I say that salmon, like all animal medicine, has a spiritual meaning and some of the main themes you can find with salmon medicine is abundance, fertility, prosperity and renewal.
[It] is inspired by the use of Coast Salish spindle whorls, which have been known to be predominantly used by women, and their ability to produce beautiful textiles which had social and spiritual significance. The disc like shape would be designed with unique designs for which was to give the wool spinner a trance like experience for healing and transformation. Today, weaving continues to be a vibrant expression of cultural identity. Salish weavers consist of self-identified women, two-spirit people, and trans people.” – Margaret August 2024
