T’suxt’sáesagame Canoe Bentwood Box
Kevin Daniel Cranmer
Price upon requestRed Cedar wood, Acrylic paint, Cedar Bark Rope, Abalone shell
Kevin Cranmer’s magnificent bentwood box illustrates the origins of the Ninalkinuw clan, one of five clans of the Namgis tribe and includes the Tlingit ancestors of the Hunt family. It was inspired by the traditional cedar containers that were designed to fit perfectly into a canoe, allowing travelers to take perishables with them on their long journeys. The boxes could be made air-tight, which meant that the perishables would be preserved for a longer period of time. Hunters and fishermen could also ensure that the bounty they brought back was still fresh, even after days of canoeing. The box did not take up much space in the canoe, as its shape allowed it to serve as a seat for the paddlers.
