Artist | Landon Gunn |
Nation | Metis / Kwakwaka'wakw Nations |
Description | Métis / Kwakwaka’wakw Nations Landon Gunn was born October 6, 1981, in Kimberly, BC. His family background is both Kwakwaka’wakw and Métis. Landon Gunn is a new generation artist who began carving in 2002 while studying Anthropology and Politics at university in Vancouver. It was at this time that he began to look for a deeper connection to his cultural heritage. In the relatively short time that he has been working as an artist, Landon has worked with some of the best jewelry and wood carvers on the Northwest Coast. He has assisted on totem poles with Haida artist, Clarence Mills, an artist who has also introduced Gunn to the finely detailed work of jewelry carving. In addition, he has worked on masks with Philip Gray and Jay Simeon, who have both been a source of inspiration. Currently, Landon is enrolled in the Northwest coast jewelry arts program at NEC run by Kwakwaka’wakw / Haida artist Dan Wallace in Vancouver BC. |

Hawk Moon Pendant
Vernon Joseph White
$1,600.00 CADArgillite, Abalone Shell, Sterling Silver, Mastodon ivory
The Hawk takes its place in the supernatural spiritual world, inspiring unique designs for masks, rattles and jewelry. For the Haida Nation, it was used to represent the Thunderbird. Often associated with the Sun, the Hawk can be distinguished by its curled beak which curves to meet the tip of the lower jaw.
When the Raven brought light to the world, some versions of the legend say that it was the Hawk who made the Raven drop the box so it opened, releasing the Sun, Moon and Stars into the Universe.
