Garner Moody was born in Prince Rupert, B.C. on May 27th, 1958. Although born in Prince Rupert, Garner was adopted by Lloyd and Muriel Moody of Skidegate, B.C., making him the nephew of Haida artist Rufus Moody.
Garner began carving at the early age of nine and, by age fifteen, he was carving his first piece of argillite. After moving to Vancouver in 1987, he spent the next two years working with renowned Haida artist Bill Reid on his Lootaas canoe and alongside a host of accomplished carvers such as Alfred Collinson, Rufus Moody, Giitsxaa, Nelson Cross, and Ding (Melvin) Hutchingson.
He was featured in the powerful television series ‘Ravens & Eagles’ filmed entirely in British Columbia. This 13-part program celebrated the traditions of Haida art through the perspective of those who practice its form. Both Garner Moody and Tim Boyko were highlighted as some of the last apprentices to work with the late master carver Bill Reid, and were recognized as some of the most promising emerging artists from Haida Gwaii.
Now residing in the Queen Charlotte Islands, Garner Moody works in various mediums including cedar, gold, argillite and paper – all exemplifying his exquisite attention to detail and extraordinary artistic skills.

Commonly used by a Shaman, soul catchers were used to cleanse human souls and spirits. If a person was sick, or perhaps possessed by a demon spirit, the soul catcher was used to coerce the evil spirit out of the body. The open ends were caped with cedar bark to hold the soul until it was cleansed and brought back from the spirit world. The healed soul of the recipient was then returned to the body by the Shaman by blowing through the soul catcher and into to the patient’s mouth.
The shape of the soul catcher is typically cut from animal bone in such a way that the ends are flared outward and the surface is carved with figures associated with the Shaman’s spirit guides. Spirit guides accompany the human spirit or soul on its transformative journey between worlds. The ends of the Soul Catcher were sealed to contain these spirits. They also protect the boundaries between the physical and spiritual world, keeping those involved in the healing ceremony safe from evil minded spirits and beings. The symmetrical arrangement of the figures essentially defines objects of this type and the figures tend to more sculptural in appearance.
Soul catchers are extremely powerful and respected healing instruments; because of this, they were often housed in special bentwood boxes to keep them safe.

Volcano Woman is perhaps one of the oldest and most revered legends which tells of a mortal”s fate if he/she does not treat sacred objects or creatures with respect. In defense of her beloved wild creatures, she controls the powerful volcanoes. Stories tell of how the killing of a frog leads the Volcano woman to destroy an entire village.
Volcano Woman is a supernatural, powerful person in First Nations mythology. She had a son who, like his mother, had supernatural abilities. He often liked to change from his Human form to that of a Frog (Wukus).
Years ago, a Prince and his two friends went fishing. Hungry, they lay their food on leaves. The Wukus (Frog), being mischievous, jumped on their food. Twice the young Prince threw the Frog into the shrubs but on the third time they threw the frog into the fire and killed the innocent creature.
A few nights later, a woman could be heard crying and wailing. “Who has done this, come forward and I will spare your village.” This warning went unheeded for some time until finally a Woman of the Elders went to the village outskirts to see her. Volcano Woman instructed the Woman of the Elders to send forth the three young men and she would spare the village from volcanic destruction. The Woman of the Elders begging for the sake of the Village told of Volcano Woman”s ultimatum – but this warning went unheeded.
On the final night of the village’s existence, Volcano Woman was heard saying, “I asked for those responsible to take heed and now you will know my vengeance.” The Village shook, a Volcano erupted, destroying the village and all who lived there.

This ornately detailed panel pipe inlayed with catlanite, abalone shell and mother of pearl tells the ancient story of Nanasimgit.
The man or Nanasimgit is depicted at the bottom of the pipe holding skils to represent his stature. It shows the numerous potlatches he has held. The following story is a shortened version as told by the artist, Christian White:
One day, the man’s wife was washing sea otter skins near the ocean, when a Killerwhale arose from the surface. It coaxed her into the water and carried her seaward while her husband watched in disbelief. Without hesitation, he quickly decided to follow them until the Killerwhale dove near a two-headed kelp, which prevented him from going any further. He was feeling quite distraught as he returned back to the village but by then he had decided to seek the help of his uncle, the Frog.
The Frog offered him advice on how he could get his wife back and suggested that he take specific objects with him for his journey. He brought spruce root twine, a gimlet and medicine, placing them in his canoe. But, before he embarked on his journey, he was urged to undergo a fast in order to cleanse his body, which involved various rituals.
Once the fast was completed, the man embarked on his quest until he came across the kelp he had encountered before. He tied his canoe to the kelp along with his possessions and climbed down beneath the surface to find himself in another world. He followed a path where he encountered three blind women that resembled Geese. He used his medicine to cure two of the women while the third one chose not to accept the medicine. The cured women vowed to repay him for his deed. As he proceeded onward, the man came across two slaves, from the Killerwhale clan, chopping wood. As they proceeded to chop the wood, the head of their axe fell off and they began to cry knowing the consequences they would face from the Chief. The man stopped to assist them and in return they directed him to his wife’s dwelling. The slaves warned the man of the watchmen pole that stood in front of the longhouse protecting the inhabitants. The watchmen had the ability to scent out and watch out for intruders.
While he proceeded further on his path and thought about how to divert the watchmen, the man encountered a Heron repairing a canoe without success. The man stopped to offer him his gimlet to successfully repair the canoe. In return for his generosity, the Heron helped conceal the man under his wing blanket from the Black Whale guards and the watchmen. He successfully entered the longhouse to happily find his wife. At this point, the watchmen discovered the man taking his wife back with him, but were unable to stop him.
When the man arrived back with his wife to his village he felt a different connection with her, as though she was not herself. At night, he would keep her in a bentwood box, but one morning when he awoke, to his surprise she escaped. She left to be with her Killerwhale family and fully transformed into a Killerwhale. This was the last he saw of her.

When Garner Moody moved to Vancouver in 1987, he spent two years working with renowned Haida artist Bill Reid. Soon after, he moved back to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) to draw inspiration from their traditional way of life.
Throughout his years of carving, Garner continues to preserve the northern Haida form line exemplified in this linage pole. His composition and balance furthers the notion that Garner demonstrates expertise in design, detail and form line.
Garner depicts crest figures signifying important family crests, such as the Eagle, Killerwhale and Thunderbird.
As one of the most prominent beings in art and mythology, the Eagle is known for its grace, power and prestige. Considered a majestic noble creature, the Eagle spirit is associated with freedom and lofty pursuits. Traditionally, Shamans believed that Eagle feathers were spiritually endowed and possessed healing powers. They used them in various ceremonial and ritual contexts; today these feathers are still strewn to welcome honored guests to peaceful and friendly gatherings.
The Eagle is respected for its intelligence as well as its vision, both figurative and literal, thereby claiming both honor and high stature. Although revered as a powerful hunter, the Eagle’s feathers are considered sacred.
The Eagle is one of two main family crests of the Haida nation and is known to mate with the same partner for its lifetime.
The Killerwhale is an important crest symbol associated with power, strength, dignity and communication.
Killerwhale Clans are thought to live in Killerwhale Villages deep within the ocean; when at home they remove their skins and live as large humans. Mating once for life and thought to be the reincarnation of great chiefs, these majestic animals are the protectors of mankind. While known to capsize canoes and carry the inhabitants to their Killerwhale Village, they are also reputed to act as guides to humans caught within storms.
This stoic pole typifies Garner Moody’s commitment and dedication to the preservation of Haida mythology and heritage. His experience culminates in this work and, as the totem represents the messenger of cultural identity, this is a prime example of function and form working in perfect harmony.
