Artist | Jupa Ishulutaq |
Nation | Pangnirtung |
Description | Jupa Ishulutaq is the son of the master carver Jaco Ishulutaq and the grandson of the prolific graphic artist Elisapee Ishulutaq. The two artists are known for using life in their community as inspiration to highlight the importance of family life and relationships, whilst drawing upon themes of environmental and social change. Jupa is an emerging carver following in the footsteps of the elder Ishulutaqs and working to uphold the family legacy. Pangnirtung is a hamlet on Baffin Island, Nunavut, located 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on an ancient beach in Pangnirtung Fjord at the north end of Cumberland Sound. Renowned for its traditional Inuit arts and crafts, this artistic community has a population of 1400, roughly 95% of whom are Inuit. |
