Raymond Shaw’s Tokwit (Female Warrior Spirit) Mask is a masterfully carved tribute to a terrifying and mysterious warrior figure featured in the Winalagalis dance ceremonies of the Kwakwaka’wakw. These dances were performed at potlatches and served to represent the power of the Kwakwaka’wakw people to the visitors and guests from neighboring coastal nations. In the art of the Northwest Coast, Tokwit is often depicted as a young female warrior painted entirely red, with rolled-up eyes, a protruding tongue, long, unkempt hair.
