Description | Haida Nation Born in 1969, Lyle R. Campbell is a member of the Haida nation of the Sta-Sta-aas Eagle Clan of the Songalth Tribe of the Kaighani Haida from Kiusta, Langara Island, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). His family name is “It-in-su” which is pronounced Edenshaw. His first training as a carver began with his fascination of the native art forms he was surrounded by. His formal training began by completing two years of native designing. He then spent several years as an understudy carefully observing the styles and techniques of some of the north coast’s premiere artists, carvers and sculptors. During this time, his own style was cultivated. He then went on to graduate from the Gitanmax School of North Coast Art (previously known as the K’san Carver’s School). Today, Lyle works in several media specializing in argillite and wood. He is a first class carver, designer, jeweler and sculptor. He has used his talents to create truly beautiful drums, paddles, blankets, jewelry and dance regalia. His work can be found in many private collections worldwide. Presently, Lyle resides in Victoria, British Columbia and maintains his artwork on a full-time basis. As well, he enjoys creating and performing new and traditional Haida songs, practicing the oral and written forms of his native language. He continues to study the myths and legends that have been passed down since the beginning of time. |

In the design itself you’ll find the Head, Dorsal Fin and a suggested Pectoral Fin. The ‘Spirit Form’ in this case is representing the Whale’s blow hole. The long fluid lines are gracefully accented by bold colors and a real sense of ‘Flow’.” – Lyle Campbell, 2019

Chief of the Sea Bentwood Box
Lyle Campbell
$3,750.00 CADYellow Cedar wood, Red Cedar wood, Opercula shells, Acrylic paint
Specific and unique to the Northwest Coast People is the bentwood or bent-corner box or container. A most outstanding item of the First Nations people, it is a made from one single plank of wood through a lengthy steaming process – a method strictly adapted by the coastal peoples.
The Chief of the Sea is the highest deity of the Haida ocean spirits. The Chief has great transformative powers and the ability to move on both land and sea, usually in his known forms; animal or human.
